Today Is The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life
by Joe Bonura , CSP

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Each morning I look in the mirror and say out loud, "Today is the first day of the rest of my life!" The good news is that each day gives you the opportunity to start over; you do not have to wait for the new year to make resolutions. You can make every day the beginning of your new year and your new life.

Forget The Past

Forget what happened yesterday, last week, last month, and last year. There is nothing that you can do to change the past, so forget the past and focus on the future. Each day, you have an opportunity to exercise your greatest power as a human being: the power to start over.

Ripe with Opportunity

This applies regardless of whether your yesterdays were great successes or failures. Each day is ripe with opportunity for success to move forward. If you started a diet last week, and yesterday you blew it, rather than give up, you simply begin again today. Just look in the mirror and say, "Today is the first day of the rest of my life, and I will go on a diet beginning today."

Follow Through Today

You can also apply that principle to your sales career. Do not get discouraged because you did not follow through with making the number of phone calls that you set as your goal. Be determined that today is the first day of the rest of your sales career.

Your First Day on the Job

Remember how you felt your first day on the job? Remember how you dressed for success? Remember how you saw yourself growing in your new career? Everything was fun, new, and exciting. You landed the job. Or better yet, you had the opportunity to start a new career, and it all began on that special day.

My First Day

My first day as an account executive in the advertising agency business was the culmination of years of study and preparation. I recall when opening the top drawer of my desk, I found a note left by the previous occupant that read, "You are only as good as your last performance." My last performance began that day and has continued every day in the advertising business and as a professional author, speaker, and sales trainer. I have always considered each day as an opportunity to shape my future. You can do the same thing beginning tomorrow morning when you make the choice to stick to a plan and to be goal-focused.

Your New Day Is Dawning

Here is how you begin:

What would you like your life to be five years from now? Begin today doing the things that will take you on that journey.

What action will you take to get you moving in that direction? Then take that action.

Each morning remind yourself of your focus. Do that every day, and you will never run out of opportunities to determine your future.

Put a post-it note on your mirror of your commitment to make every day the first day of the rest of your life.

About Joe Bonura

His background is unique. Joe owned and operated a highly successful advertising agency for 18 years. During that time, he found his advertising campaigns were more effective when he educated his clients in the areas of sales and service. He conducted training seminars for his clients as added value. Word spread that Joe was a quality speaker and more and more people asked him to speak. The demand became so high that he sold the agency to three of his associates to start his own speaking and consulting company, Joe Bonura & Associates, Inc.

Joe is past President of the Kentucky Speakers Association and a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), a prestigious designation earned by only 8% of the 3,600 member National Speakers Association. Joe presently serves on the board of directors of NSA.
