Stop Putting It Off

The Devil Made You Not Do It

The Earl’s words are a wise motto to follow every day of your lives if you are to maximize your time here on this planet. I like the way that Chesterfield attacks each of the devil’s tools that stymie productivity.

Idleness Is The Devil’s Workshop

Idleness – you are sitting in the traffic of life’s minutes, doing nothing, killing time and killing your opportunity to succeed. Once an opportune minute passes, and is wasted, it is dead and buried, never to be offered to you again.

Nothing Happens Until You Do Something

Laziness – you just can’t seem to get moving. A good question to ask yourself when you find yourself sprawled out on the couch, instead of doing something that you know in your heart needs doing, is, “What am I waiting for?” Then reaffirm it with the positive statement: Nothing happens until I do something.

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

Procrastination – the word responsible for more failure than any other word in the English language. Why do something today when you can put it off until tomorrow? Realize that you will have the same excuses tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day.

. . . “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”

I like the positive words that Philip Dormer Stanhope (Chesterfield’s real name) uses to incite action:

Reach Out If You Expect To Win

Snatch – When I was growing up in New Orleans, I rode the merry-go-round at the City Park. As I sat on the wooden horse, I tried to snatch the golden ring as I passed the ring dispenser. If I snatched the ring, I could get a free ride. At an early age, I quickly learned that I could win only if I reached far enough.

Never Let Go

Seize – Take hold, never let go are the words that come to mind when I hear the word seize. If you use time wisely, you can take hold of each moment and make it productive. While you can’t grab a minute, you can grab a phone, seize it, and begin to dial for dollars.

Bad Tired Or Good Tired

Enjoy – You always enjoy life more when you feel productive. I have just finished making my phone dials for the day. I can now enjoy the rest of the day because I have earned the right. If you don’t make the required sales calls, you will go home from the office “bad tired.” You will be irritable with others, and you will not feel good about yourself. But, if you truly work hard, you will still return home tired, but you will go home “good tired.” That is when you are exhausted, but you have an inner feeling of accomplishment. Others will also see the difference in you.

If The Shoe Fits, Wear It

Nike’s famous advertising slogan is “Just Do It!” This slogan applies to any area in your life where you have had a problem being proactive.

Now Is The Time

W. Clement Stone also had an incredible motto. It is one of my favorites; in fact, I used it to write this article. Stone says, “When faced with a task that you have been putting off, say these three powerful words: Do It Now!” Say the words and follow through with action.

Time To Decide

Make a list of five things that you have been procrastinating. Set a time when you will begin each task, and then note it on your calendar. Make an appointment with yourself. Select one of the items to begin with “Now.”

Create the habit each day to make a list of the things you have to do, prioritize the list, and then begin. You will begin to see immediate results in proactive behavior, and to see financial results, as well.
